The U.S. Army Transformation and Training Command G-2’s Army Mad Scientist Initiative facilitated the Great Power Competition and Conflict in the Age of Authoritarian Collusion Virtual Event with The College of William & Mary’s Whole of Government Center of Excellence. This event explored the Operational Environment implications of trends emerging from contemporary conflicts and proxy wars, as well as adversarial influence and presence in the Global South and polar regions, through the lens of authoritarian collusion.
Several key themes emerged across the presentations:
• Expanded Modern Battlefield. The modern battlefield comprises new nonstate actors and proxy forces, and has demonstrated the effectiveness of hybrid warfare and strategic competition below the threshold of armed conflict.
• Adversaries’ Global South Strategies. China and Russia are both successful in the Global South, although they employ opposite strategies to expand their influence in the region.
• Arctic as a Contested System. China and Russia are working to exploit the Arctic, a critical nexus of security, trade, and resource interests.
